Tilford East Bridge

Painting of ancient bridge in Tilford village, Surrey
An Original Painting by Stanscapes:     Acrylics on Box Canvas 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 inches)

Tilford East Bridge is in the Surrey village of Tilford, at the confluence of the two arms of the River Wey before it flows on downstream to the River Thames. There are two medieval bridges over the River Wey in Tilford - this one is crossed when entering Tilford from the direction of Godalming and Guildford. With its semi-circular stone arches, it is thought to have been originally built by the Normans in the thirteenth century.

The ancient western bridge had to be completely rebuilt, retaining its medieval character, and was reopened in 2005. It is, however, protected from damage of traffic by a new modern bridge. A painting of the old western bridge can be see in the Archive pages on this website.

Tilford is an attractive English village with a cricket green, ancient oak tree and popular pub - all in addition to the two river bridges.
