This is just one of three paintings of this castle. To view the other paintings, look among the "Pictures for Sale" pages.
This is a both a landscape and seascape painting showing the Scottish fortress, Eilean Donan Castle, looking west. This is one of Scotland's
most-photographed historic castles. It has a strategic location a few miles before Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to the Isle of Skye.
Almost surrounded by sea and majestic mountains of the Scottish Highlands, this becomes a landscape, seascape and a view of a fine building, all in
a single painting.
Eilean Donan Castle was built on a small offshore island and is linked to the shore by a narrow stone bridge.
The original historic castle dates back to 1230 and was built to protect this area from
the Vikings. During the Jacobite uprising in 1719 it was occupied by troops from Spain, but was then blown up during an English sea-borne attack.
Rebuilt in the early 1900s, it has been featured in major films and is visited by crowds of tourists to the Scottish Western Highlands.
