On the Way to Skye |
Original Painting by Stanley Port Acrylic on
canvas 50 x 70
cm |
This is just one of three paintings of this castle. To view the other paintings click on the "More Scotland" button.
A view of Eilean Donan Castle looking west. This is one of Scotland's most-photographed scenes. It has a strategic location a few miles before
Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to the Isle of Skye.
Almost surrounded by sea and majestic mountains, this becomes a landscape, seascape and a view of a fine building, all in one painting.
It was built on a small offshore island and is linked to the shore by a narrow stone bridge.
The original castle dates back to 1230 and was built to protect this area from
the Vikings. During the Jacobite uprising in 1719 it was occupied by troops from Spain, but was then blown up during an English sea-borne attack.
Rebuilt in the early 1900s,
it has been featured in major films and is visited by crowds of tourists.
