Basilica of St Francis in Assisi Original Painting by Stanley Port Acrylic on canvas 40 x 50 cm Situated in the Italian province of Umbria, the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi appears as a single magnificent building, but it is formed by two churches placed one on top of the other and differently orientated. St Francis died in 1226 and the basilica was consecrated in 1253. Some of the greatest artists of Italy, such as Cimabue and Giotto, produced many of the wonderful frescoes that adorn the walls of both churches.
